Hands-on Gait Analysis Workshop: Biomechanics in Practice

Posted on February 04, 2026

A highly successful 3-hour hands-on workshop on gait analysis was recently completed at the Center for Interdisciplinary Education and Research in Rehabilitation (CIDERR) of Metropolitan College.

The workshop brought together students and professionals from the fields of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Podiatry, creating a truly interdisciplinary learning environment focused on clinical movement analysis.

Participants engaged in applied gait assessment, biomechanical interpretation, and real-world clinical scenarios, bridging theoretical concepts with hands-on experience. Emphasis was placed on observation, data-driven reasoning, and clinical decision-making in gait evaluation.

As part of the hands-on experience, participants were introduced to a custom-developed gait analysis software platform developed by the author, designed to support markerless motion analysis and clinical interpretation through modern computer vision techniques. The platform was demonstrated live and explored by students as a practical tool for translating movement data into clinically meaningful insights. In addition, the platform is equipped with a small language model (Phi-3), which analyzes gait-derived metrics and supports clinical reasoning by proposing context-aware rehabilitation and clinical exercise protocols, as demonstrated during the session.

The software platform presented during the workshop is available online at: https://giorgosbouh.github.io/gait_analysis_mediapipe/

The strong engagement, active participation, and quality of discussion throughout the session highlighted the growing demand for applied biomechanics education that directly connects research, clinical practice, and professional training.

Initiatives like this reflect CIDERR’s mission to provide high-impact educational experiences while fostering collaboration across rehabilitation disciplines, supporting both academic development and clinical excellence.
